‘A History of Clouds’ is a multimedia project about clouds, how they are
represented and how they have given birth to the science of meteorology.
How can one describe and depict such fleeting objects? That was the question
that bothered first painters and then scientists in the 19th century.
Nowadays, people ‘catch’ clouds every day, yet every day they slip through
our fingers.
The aim of our project is to share with the viewer the emergence of a
scientific discipline, meteorology, through a complex story of
representation relating the evolution of man’s techniques and of how he
views the clouds. From the paintbrush to the satellite, this is the story of
a handful of passionate scientists, painters, photographers and explorers
who were enthralled by the ‘spectacle of the sky’.
It will show the emergence of a surprising complicity between artists and
scientists, but it will also present examples of doctored photos and the
establishment of the first international scientific network.
