Short description
Land reclamation and urbanization efforts around the world have caused an unprecedented demand for sand, and the extraction of this increasingly rare and precious commodity is despoiling some of the most vulnerable environments and communities on the planet. This piece will incorporate drone photogrammetry of landscapes and waterways from which sand is being dredged—often with disastrous results—as well as the mega-construction sites made possible by the extraction. It will also tell the stories of those whose lives have been upended by the process, as well as those making a much-needed living as part of the construction boom.
How innovative is the project
This project will be a roomscale VR project that takes advantage of virtual space to portray the impact of sand mining on both the environment and poor communities. We will also use 3D data and information visualizations to show the sheer tonnes of of sand needed for a single building and how sand dredging and mining destabilizes nearby land. Lastly we will meet individuals who have lost their homes because of the landlides caused by river dredging.
