Short description

Drone viscerally collapses the distance in perspective between the people flying lethal drones missions and the people dying in them. You and three others are welcomed as guests of the USAF, and given a flight suit and a place to put your belongings. Your co-pilot shows you into the control room and helps you into a VR headset. You’re training to fly UAV missions, using the most up to date technology. The target you are following is confirmed as a person of interest. As you fly you stop being able to see anything else apart from the ground in the cross hairs of the drone's sights. You spread your arms to circle a compound and watch as people assemble: someone on the ground spreads their arms. As you move to slow the drone you see the person on the ground move. The person on the ground is you. You hear every movement you make interpreted as supporting intelligence. You’re ordered to fire: the world pixellates into a full white out, replaced by strange shapes and figures made of light. Your headset 'blinks' up into a completely different environment. You’re in northern Pakistan at ground level, it's beautiful - you can see the sky for the first time. A woman is standing opposite you, she looks past you. Then she walks past you down the track, next to a bombed out compound and the wreck of a truck. The scene fades, you are prompted to take off your headset. The drone control room has transformed, you are facing the others you arrived with, who have experienced the same as you

How innovative is the project

This project is completely innovative in form, in that it takes live data from the participant to create a split perspective upon themselves - as the person controlling the drone and the person on the ground at the same time. This creates a feedback loop in which the narrative comments upon the participant's own actions, but with only one possible outcome. To that end this project combines interactive game elements with live motion capture, live performance, and 360 film.
